Biosketch: J. P. Shim

Dr. J.P. Shim is currently Professor of Computer Information Systems(CIS) at Robinson College of Business at Georgia State University. He is teaching graduate courses (Flex MBA, Professional MBA, Business Telecom) and undergraduate course (Business Telecom). Before joining CIS department at GSU in 2011, he was on the faculty at Mississippi State University for 27 years (1984-2011). He was Professor of Business Information Systems, Larry and Tonya Fabreau Notable Scholar, and John Grisham Professor at MSU. He was a seventeen-time recipient of Outstanding Faculty Awards at MSU. His faculty colleagues have awarded him Outstanding Faculty Award(1992, 1996), Outstanding Research Award(1990), Outstanding Service Award(1993, 2007, 2009), Professor of Eminence for Mortar Board (1999), Faculty/Scientist/Engineer Award (1999), John and Ann Hairston Faculty Award (2010), Diversity Award (2011) at Mississippi State University. He received the Ralph E. Powe Research Excellence Award and John Grisham Faculty Excellence Award at MSU. He has been nominated/awarded for Distinguished Member for the National Society of Collegiate Scholars (NSCS).

He received his Ph.D. from University of Nebraska-Lincoln and his MBA from Seoul National University. He has been on the faculty of University of Wisconsin (1982-1984).  He completed Harvard Business School's Executive Education program (Information Systems) [he has been invited to the program]. He taught Information Systems at Georgia State University (graduate level in 1991), New York University (Stern School of Business in 1998), and Chinese U of Hong Kong (Executive MBA, MS in MIS in 2000/2001) while he was on sabbatical/leave. Professor Shim has received various professional awards, grants and distinctions, including National Science Foundation(NSF), Microsoft, State of Mississippi IHL, U.S. Small Business Administration, U.S. EPA, Booz Allen, Korea Sanhak Foundation, Japan Foundation, and Korea Foundation grants.  He received Award for Excellence in Research when he was a graduate student at UNL.

Professor Shim's research interests are in the areas of business telecommunications, e-commerce, mobile commerce,  streaming technology, multimedia development and applications, decision support systems, strategic information systems, and multi criteria decision making. He is the co-author of several books. He has published over 70 articles in the journals such as Decision Support Systems, Communications of the ACM, Journal of Association  for Information Systems (JAIS), IEEE, Journal of Strategic Information Systems,Communications of AIS, Information & Management, European Journal of Information Systems, Journal of Information Technology, Journal of Organizational Computing and Electronic Commerce, Pacific Asia Journal of AIS, Computers & Operations Research, OMEGA, Journal of the Operational Research Society, Human Relations, Journal of Multi Criteria Decision Analysis, Long Range Planning, Interfaces(INFORMS), and Socio-Economic Planning Sciences. Recently, his co-authored DSS paper has been cited as top in Social Science Citation Index citations, Google citations, Elsevier citations, SCOPUS citations, and downloads in Decision Support Systems. He has presented over 150 papers at Academy of Management, ICIS, DSI, FMA, INFORMS,AMCIS and served as Track chair and/or Program Committee at Decision Sciences Institute(4 times; 1986, 1993, 1997, 2007), International INFORMS{TIMS}(twice; 1995, 2000), AMCIS (9 times; 1995, 1996, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2009, 2013, 2014), International DSI (twice; 1993, 1999), ICIS, INFORMS{TIMS}, and others. He serves as a referee/editorial review board member for numerous journals and serves/served as Senior Editor, Associate Editor, and Departmental Editor. Recently, he has served as a program co-chair for U.S-Japan joint workshop/conference sponsored by NSF. Dr. Shim is currently serving on Wireless Telecommunication Symposium in Pomona/California as a program co-chair (2004,2005, 2006) and as a chair for the program committee (2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014). He is currently Fellow Committee Chair for WTS. He served as Program Co-Chair for 2013 Americas Conference on Information Systems (AMCIS).

He is a frequent invited lecturer/speaker (more than 350 times) at numerous universities, research institutes, governments, and companies in the U.S., France(ESSEC), England, Korea, Germany, Taiwan, Japan, Hong Kong, China, Kuwait, Jamaica, Portugal, Turkey, and Singapore. Over the past twenty years, Dr. Shim has been instrumental in bringing to MSU campus nearly 350 business executives from Korea to receive executive education/training entitled International Business Strategy Program. He organized an executive education program for Korean business women/men executives entitled International Business Women's Leadership Program(renamed Global Business Strategy Program). He served as co-director for Global Leadership Program.  Professor Shim has been selected as a participant in "Japan Study Tour" sponsored by AACSB and the Keizai Koho Center in Summer 1997. He was awarded several grants (FOCUS and NSF) for travel to the IFIP World Computer Congress in Vienna/Budapest, for travel to Singapore, and for travel to Japan. He worked as a consultant for Booz-Allen & Hamilton-ASE, Inc., U.S. EPA, KIA Motors, Chew Young Roo, and others.

Dr. Shim was a member of numerous university, college, and departmental committees including University Faculty Research Advisory Committee at MSU. He served as Chair of Universiry Research Initiation Program(RIP) Committee, chaired Ralph Powe Junior Faculty Award Committee, chaired several college committees, served on the search committee for Director of Sponsored Program Agency, severd on search committee for Director of International Services Office, served on MSU Alumni Outstanding Faculty Selection Committee, and served on MSU Task Force Committee on Research and Graduate Education and MSU Globalization Committee. He was also MSU Regional Ambassador to Far East and directed MSU Global Leadership Program over the past 5 years (2007-2011).

His comments on business and technology have appeared in the Associated Press, The Clarion Ledger (Jackson, Mississippi), Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal, Daily Journal, Chosun Ilbo (Chosun Daily News) Column article(Korea), The Korea Economic Daily (Korea), Maeil Business Newspaper (Korea), and Global Atlanta.com, and on National Public Radio and WCVI (CBS-TV), among others.

He directed the GSU Global Leadership Program: Korea Study Tour 2012 (GSU slideshow). Professor Shim is Executive Director of the GSU RCB Korean-American Business Center, which hosts the  Korea Study Tour, Distinguished Speaker Series, and other events/projects. He serves on the RCB MBA Steering Committee and the Korean Advisory Group for the J. Mack Robinson College of Business. He is also Chair of GSU Korea Branding and Development Committee.
