Mobile Commerce

Mobile commerce is an area covering diverse applications and wireless technologies. Many new applications have become possible due to the mobility support provided by the underlying wireless and mobile infrastrcuture. Upkar Varshney has been very active in mobile commerce since 1999. He is credited with some of the best and widely cited papers in and related to mobile commerce. He has written more than 40 journal and conference papers on mobile commerce, covering many new applications, location management, transaction support, multicast and group communications, and network architectures.

Here are some measurements of his impact on mobile commerce and services.
1. His paper in IEEE Computer (October 2000) is considered to be the first mobile commerce paper in any IEEE publication.
2. His two journal papers in mobile commerce (IEEE Computer 2000 and MONET 2002) are ranked first and second in number of citations (source: www.scholar.google.com)
3. His paper on location management in ACM Transactions on Internet Technology (2003) was the most downloaded paper out of all ACM transactions in 2004 (source: Communications of the ACM, Dec. 2004)
4. His MONET (2002) paper has been the most downloaded paper for most of 2005 so far (source: Springer MONET website)
5. According to an estimate, more than 50% of all m-commerce published research papers are influenced by his work in one way or the other.
6. The total citations for his mobile commerce papers exceed 1000 (one thousand) including at least 1 with more than 200 and at least five others with more than 100 each!
